Otaru Cruise Complete Guide | The Canal and the Blue Cave [2026]
・
Otaru is a port town with two faces: "the canal town" and "the sea town". From canal cruises that tour the streetscape by boat to coastline tours along cliffs and blue sea, there are cruises to suit every purpose. This 2026 guide introduces carefully chosen operators for four types (streetscape lovers, scenery lovers, families, and relaxed large-boat fans), including the latest on the Blue Cave since the rockfall in July 2025.
The big picture: two ways to enjoy Otaru cruises, "canal" and "sea"

This image was generated by AI for illustrative purposes.
Otaru cruises fall into two broad types: "touring the canal area" and "heading out from the port along the coast toward the Blue Cave". The first is like a town walk, viewing the historic stone warehouses from the water. The second is set against the cliffs and clear blue sea of Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
Approximate times: canal cruises take about 40 minutes, and coastline and Blue Cave tours about 70–90 minutes. Choosing to suit your stamina, the weather and the ages of your companions makes for a more satisfying trip.
Weather and sea conditions directly affect the experience. Canal cruises are relatively unaffected by waves, while coastline tours may be canceled or switched to an in-harbor course in bad weather. Make the final check on the day on each operator's official website or by phone (especially on the Sea of Japan side in summer, the morning weather often changes by the afternoon).
In Otaru Port, departure points differ by type and operator: near Chuo Bridge, the North Canal (Ironai 3-chome), Shukutsu Marina and so on. Checking each operator's departure point on a map in advance makes things smooth.
Otaru Port is close to central Otaru, and many departure points can be reached from JR Otaru Station (check the official websites).
Type 1: Streetscape lovers — enjoy the canal's history and night views
"Streetscape" cruises tour the canal area by boat, letting you enjoy Otaru's historic scenery of stone warehouses from the water. At about 40 minutes they're compact, suiting those unsure of their stamina and days with unsettled weather. In the daytime the stone warehouses look especially stately, and at night the gas-lamp illuminations shine on the water, so you get a completely different look depending on the time of day.

Type 2: Blue Cave scenery lovers — feel the power of nature

"Scenery" cruises run along the coastline of Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, where you can experience rugged terrain with sheer cliffs and a sea shining turquoise blue. However, due to the rockfall on July 17, 2025, entry into the cave remains suspended for the 2026 season.
At around 2 p.m. on July 17, 2025, a rock about 2 meters across fell from the upper wall near the entrance to the Blue Cave (no one was injured). Following this, the council for use of the waters around the Blue Cave and Mado-iwa rock and the Otaru Port Cruising Association decided the same day to suspend entry into the cave. The policy "no entry unless countermeasure works are carried out" has been maintained since, and the suspension continues as of the 2026 season (no date for resuming has been set).
Operators have switched to courses that stop near the cave entrance for viewing, and you can still enjoy the clear blue sea and the surrounding cliffs. If you're booking in hopes of entering the cave, be sure to check the latest status on each operator's official website.
Below is information on three operators whose official websites were checked at the time of research (May 3, 2026).

Type 3: Family experiences — peace of mind with kids

This image was generated by AI for illustrative purposes.
For families with small children, glass-bottom boats where you can see the sea floor and small-group boats are popular. They're positioned as hands-on cruises in calm sea conditions, and you can choose to suit your children's age and stamina.
Blue Grotto (official website: bluegrotto.jp), newly available from the 2026 season, is scheduled to open for Golden Week. It uses a roofed boat departing around Shukutsu Marina; check the official website around Golden Week for the latest details.

It has a roof and side seats, so it can handle sudden changes in weather. Morning sailings in summer, when the sun is strong, have the clearest water, the best time to see the sea floor.

*"Marine Cruise OTARU", listed in the old version of this article, has been merged here as Prolo Marine (official website: otaru.fun), because the departure address (8-1 Chikko, in front of Katsunai Seaside Park) is the same. We could not find a separate official website or contact details, so whether it is a separate operator is*.

Type 4: Relaxed large-boat fans — stable in bad weather and comfortable

This type is for those who want a large boat that rides relatively steadily even in rough seas. These sightseeing boats carry 60–80 passengers, and you can relax and enjoy the coastline from a roofed deck. They suit everyone from small children to older travelers, and are reassuring if you don't like rocking.

Enjoying each season — when to go
Otaru's cruise season is mainly spring to autumn, but canal cruises run all year. Knowing each season's features leads to a fuller experience.
Spring (May–June) has temperatures of 13–19°C, without summer's crowds and with fairly calm seas. The glass-bottom boat opens on May 1, and Tsuusen operates from April 1. Golden Week (around May 3–6) is busy, but with a reservation you can be sure of boarding. From early June, Tsuusen's sunset sailing (departs 17:40) also begins, so you can enjoy a twilight cruise unique to early summer in Hokkaido, when the sun sets late.
Summer (July–August) is the season with the most visitors to Otaru (check the official websites). Bookings for Blue Cave tours are especially concentrated on weekends and during Obon, so booking 1–2 weeks ahead is safer. In the 2026 season, bookings tend to be calmer than usual because of the suspension of entry into the Blue Cave.
Autumn (September–October) has clear air and relatively stable seas, a season with good views. Many operators close for the season between mid- and late October, so early October is the last chance. Otaru Glass Boat runs until October 4, and Aobato and Kaiyo until October 18.
In winter (November–March), only Otaru Canal Cruise and PONTE keep running (PONTE has shorter hours in winter). All Blue Cave cruises are suspended for the winter. A winter canal cruise offers a dreamlike scene of snow-covered stone warehouses and gas-lamp illuminations.

Booking, clothing and precautions
Here are points that are good to know before boarding.
Booking and checking on the day: as a rule, book directly on each operator's official website. Weekends during Golden Week, Obon and the autumn leaves season fill up especially fast, so it's best to book 1–2 weeks before your trip. Sailings may be canceled or routes changed depending on the day's weather. Check operating status on each operator's official website or by phone just before boarding.
Clothing: on the sea, it feels 5–10°C cooler than on land. Even in summer, bringing a light layer keeps you comfortable. In strong summer sun, bring a hat and sunscreen; this is especially important on the 70–90 minute courses with a long time outdoors. A compact raincoat is also reassuring.
If you're worried about seasickness, taking motion-sickness medicine 30–60 minutes before boarding is effective. You're more likely to get sick on days with high waves, so if you don't feel well, deciding not to board is also important.
For cameras and smartphones, use a neck strap or waterproof case to avoid dropping them in the water. Spray can fly near the cave. Cancellation policies differ by operator; check them when you book.
