How the Day Goes — From Reception to Tasting
Your day will go smoothly in this order. Use the following flow, from arrival and reception to tasting and free time, as a guide.
Arrival and reception
The main gate is about 3–5 minutes' walk from JR Yoichi Station. Guided tour participants can use the free parking lot in front of the main gate (if you are only visiting the shop and museum, use the shop-side parking).
Aim to arrive 5–10 minutes before your start time and confirm your booking at the reception window at the main gate (show your confirmation email). After checking in, you can wait in the Visitor Center until the tour starts. The Visitor Center has exhibits and videos on the production process, which make good preparation before the tour.
Guided tour (about 70 minutes)
The guided tour proceeds in this order.
- Introductory film at the Visitor Center (about 15 minutes): A video explaining the whisky-making process and the history of the Yoichi Distillery
- Tour of the distillation building, kiln building and warehouses (about 40–50 minutes): You move around the site with a guide. You can see up close the pot stills heated by direct coal fire, rare anywhere in the world, and see the distillation building in operation.
- Move to the tasting area: After the tour, there is a tasting session
Tasting (about 20 minutes)
Guided tour participants can taste three kinds of whisky, one glass each, free of charge.
- Who: Guided tour participants (free)
- What: Three kinds of whisky (one glass each)
- For drivers and minors: Soft drinks and tea are also available
Time in the tasting area is limited. It goes more smoothly if you set aside separate time after the tasting to browse the shop.
Free time after the tour
After the guided tour, you can explore and use the site freely.
| Spot | Hours | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Nikka Museum | No booking needed, free | Exhibits on four brands; about 20–30 minutes |
| Distillery Shop | 9:15–16:15 | Yoichi-only whisky and souvenirs |
| RITA's KITCHEN | 10:00–15:00 (LO 15:20) | Restaurant inside the distillery |
You can visit the Nikka Museum freely without booking. The shop also stocks limited-edition whisky you can only buy at the Yoichi Distillery, which makes it a good place for souvenirs.
How long it takes
| Combination | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Guided tour only | About 1 hour 30 minutes (70-minute tour + 20-minute tasting) |
| Guided tour + museum + shop | About 2–2.5 hours |
| Guided tour + museum + shop + lunch | About 3–4 hours |

Tips for Avoiding the Crowds
Golden Week, summer holidays, autumn long weekends and spring break are the busiest times. Keep the following points in mind for a comfortable visit.
The busy periods are: Golden Week (May), summer holidays (July–August), autumn long weekends (September–October) and spring break (March).
Weekday mornings (9:00–11:00) tend to be relatively quiet. The first slot (9:00) is especially likely to have space.
In busy periods, the surest approach is to start checking the booking site two to four weeks before your preferred date and book as soon as a spot opens. Spots freed by cancellations are updated in real time, so checking availability can work even at the last minute.
Same-day booking: If there are spots available, you can book on the day through the official website. It is difficult in busy periods, though, so book in advance as a rule. Please check the official website for how easy same-day booking is in 2026 and for special closing days*.
English Tours
Guided tours are available in English (booking required). Please check the official website (https://distillery.nikka.com/yoichi/) for English tour times, capacity and details for 2026*.
The booking page is available in Japanese and English. Information at the shop and museum is available in multiple languages.
RITA's Kitchen — The Restaurant Inside the Distillery
"RITA's KITCHEN" is a restaurant on the distillery grounds with dishes you can only eat here.
- Hours: 10:00–15:00 (LO 15:20)
- Location: On the distillery grounds
When busy, it tends to get crowded at lunchtime (12:00–14:00). Allocating your time well before or after the guided tour reduces waiting. A smooth pattern is to choose an early morning tour slot and have lunch around noon after it ends.
Please check the official website for the latest menu and prices.
Getting Back After the Tasting
Never drive after the tasting. JR Yoichi Station is about 3–5 minutes' walk from the main gate. If you plan to enjoy the tasting, going back by JR is the most convenient and safest option.
It takes about 24 minutes by JR to Otaru, and about 1 hour 20–30 minutes to Sapporo including a change (check times on the JR Hokkaido official website before your visit).
