Three Ways to Visit

The distillery offers three types of visit to suit your interests and schedule.

A. Free guided tour (reservation required)

This is the heart of the distillery experience. It takes about 70 minutes and combines a look at the distilling process (about 50 minutes) with a tasting (about 20 minutes).

  • Price: Free
  • Booking: Advance reservation through the official website is required
  • Tour times: Every 30 minutes between 9:00 and 15:00 (no 12:30 tour)
  • Tasting: Whisky or non-alcoholic drinks (juice or tea)

The tour runs as follows.

  1. Watch a film on whisky making at the visitor center 2. Tour the distillation building and warehouses with a guide 3. See Yoichi's double distillation in pot stills (single distillers) up close 4. Tasting after the tour

B. Nikka Museum (no reservation needed)

You can freely explore exhibits on four of Nikka Whisky's signature brands. It's a good option if you couldn't get a tour reservation or are short on time.

  • Price: Free
  • Booking: Not required
  • Hours: 9:15–16:15

On Saturdays only, there is also a "Nikka Museum Tour" where you taste four whiskies with commentary from staff (check the official website for details).

C. Paid events (advance reservation required)

For those who want to dive deeper into whisky.

  • Tasting seminar (Key Malt Seminar): Held on weekdays, paid
  • Platinum VIP Tour: Held on weekends, paid

Check the official website each time for prices, dates and capacity*.

How to Book and Avoid the Crowds

The free guided tour is very popular, and slots fill up fast on weekends, during summer vacation and over holidays. Keep the following in mind.

To be safe, start checking availability 2–4 weeks before the date you want.

How to book: 1. Go to the official booking site (https://distillery.nikka.com/yoichi/reservation/reserve) 2. Choose your date, time slot and number of people 3. Receive the confirmation email and bring it with you on the day

Busy periods:

  • Summer vacation (late July to August)
  • Autumn holiday weekends (September–October)
  • Weekends in general
  • Periods with events related to the NHK drama

If you want to avoid the crowds, weekday mornings tend to be relatively quiet.

Tasting and Getting There

If you plan to taste, come by JR train or bus.

JR Yoichi Station is only about 3 minutes on foot from the distillery, which is reason enough to use public transportation. Driving after tasting is strictly prohibited. If you're the driver, one option is to let only your companions taste whisky while you choose the non-alcoholic tasting.

Getting Around the Site and How Long It Takes

Allow at least 2–3 hours to fully enjoy the distillery.

Activity Approximate time
Free guided tour (tour + tasting) About 70 min
Nikka Museum (self-guided) About 20–30 min
Souvenirs and tasting at the Distillery Shop About 20 min
Meal at the restaurant (optional) About 30–60 min

At the Distillery Shop you can also buy whisky available only at Yoichi. If you're buying bottles to take home, it's a good idea to bring cushioning or packing material to prevent breakage.

The restaurant is open 10:30–15:50 (closing time may vary). It gets busy in peak season, so factor in meal time before or after your tour*.

The Story Behind Nikka Whisky: Masataka Taketsuru and Yoichi

Knowing the background before you visit makes the tour all the more rewarding.

Founder Masataka Taketsuru went to Scotland in 1918 to learn whisky making at its source. After returning to Japan, he founded Nikka Whisky and chose the town of Yoichi as its birthplace in 1934. Yoichi was chosen for its cool, humid climate similar to Scotland's, and for its access to coal and good water.

Today, Yoichi Distillery still uses the traditional method of double distillation in the pot stills (single distillers) that Taketsuru introduced. It is also known for keeping up direct coal-fired distillation, which has become rare worldwide.

Masataka Taketsuru was the model for the NHK morning drama "Massan" (2014–2015), after which visitor numbers rose sharply. Whisky fans from Japan and abroad still come in large numbers today.

Yoichi Exclusives: What You Can Buy at the Shop

At the Distillery Shop you can buy limited items available only at Yoichi Distillery. Alongside single malts unique to Yoichi, you'll find distillery-exclusive bottles.

To get them home, bring packing material to prevent breakage or arrange shipping. Bottled whisky also requires care with airline baggage (liquid restrictions).

For specific stock, prices and availability, check the official website or ask on site (the selection changes over time).
