Arrival station JR Yoichi Station

Last train (approx.) Around 22:30 from Otaru (check the exact time on the official website)

Why JR is best if you plan to taste: you can't drive after a tasting at the distillery, so coming by public transport is a given. JR Yoichi Station is right in front of the distillery, and on the way back there's little waiting, making it easy to use.

Note: JR Hokkaido is considering closing the Hakodate Main Line (Yamasen), so watch for future changes in service. For the exact 2026 times and frequency, check the JR Hokkaido official website (https://www.jrhokkaido.co.jp/)*.

Car / rental car: for days without a tasting

Routes and times

  • Via the Shiribeshi Expressway (Otaru-nishi IC to Yoichi IC): about 20–25 min
  • Tolls: ¥920 regular / ¥640 with ETC
  • National Route 5 (along the coast, ordinary road): about 30–40 min
  • In winter, snow and icy roads add time. Studless winter tires are essential

You cannot drive after drinking at the distillery. If you plan to taste, always choose JR or the bus.

Getting from Yoichi Station to each spot

Knowing how to get around after arriving at Yoichi Station makes things smooth.

Spot From Yoichi Station
Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery About 3 min on foot (right in front of the station)
Kakizaki Shoten Kaisen Kobo About 3 min on foot (along National Route 5)
Yoichi Space Museum Space Dome About 7 min on foot, or 1 min by bus to "Uchu Kinenkan-mae"
Yoichi Winery (Yoichi Budoshu Jozosho) About 5–10 min by car (about 3 km)*
Fugoppe Cave About 5–10 min by car*
Yoichi Fisheries Museum Within walking distance (checking at the local tourist information center is recommended)

The distillery, seafood restaurants and the Space Museum are all within walking distance of Yoichi Station. On days when you visit several orchards or wineries, an efficient pattern is to see the station area in the morning and then go to the orchard area by taxi or car in the afternoon.

Planning a day trip

Yoichi is the perfect distance for a day trip from Otaru. Here are some tips for planning by purpose.

Whisky and seafood (half a day to a day): a popular course is to book an early-morning Nikka distillery tour (getting there by JR) and then have a seafood bowl at Kakizaki Shoten after the tour.

Fruit and wine (a day): a car or rental car is handy for visiting orchards and wineries (you can't combine this with a distillery tasting). Starting at the orchards in the morning makes it easier to avoid the seasonal crowds.

Combining several themes (a day or more): if you want to see the Space Museum, cultural heritage sites, orchards and wineries, it's realistic to stay a night or visit several times in different seasons.

Seasonal travel tips

What there is to see in Yoichi changes with the season, so thinking about how it pairs with your transport makes your itinerary smoother.

Spring (April–May): strawberry-picking season

The strawberry farms are a little away from Yoichi Station. Realistically, take JR to Yoichi Station and then go to the farm by taxi or a car arranged in advance. If you combine a farm and the Nikka distillery on the same day, you need to decide your transport depending on whether you do the tasting first or last.

Summer (June–August): peak season for cherries and sea urchin

Arriving at Yoichi Station by JR and just walking around the nearby spots (the distillery and Kakizaki Shoten) makes for a full half day. This overlaps with the peak of the sea urchin season, so Kakizaki Shoten gets crowded. Going early makes things smoother.

Autumn (September–November): grape, apple and wine season

A car is handy for visiting several orchards and wineries. But on days with winery tours that include tastings, plan to combine public transport and taxis. There's a taxi stand in front of JR Yoichi Station.

Winter (December–March): whisky sightseeing only

The orchards, the Space Museum and cultural heritage sites close for the winter. If the Nikka distillery is your goal, a simple round trip by JR is best. Midwinter Yoichi has snow, so if you drive, check road conditions.

First trains and buses (approximate)

If you've booked an early guided tour at the distillery (in the 9 o'clock hour), knowing when to leave Otaru makes planning easier.

By JR: the first and early-morning trains from Otaru start in the 6 o'clock hour. Trains leaving Otaru in the 7–8 o'clock hour will get you to a 9:00 distillery tour with time to spare.

By bus: early Highway Yoichi buses leave Otaru around 7 o'clock (check the Chuo Bus official website for details).

For exact times, check the JR Hokkaido official website (https://www.jrhokkaido.co.jp/) and the Hokkaido Chuo Bus official website*.

FAQ

What's the most convenient way to get from Otaru to Yoichi?

The JR Hakodate Main Line is the simplest: no transfers, about 24–25 minutes, ¥470. Yoichi Station is in a great location, a 3-minute walk from the Nikka Yoichi Distillery. If you plan to taste, JR is best.

How long does it take from Otaru to Yoichi?

About 24–25 minutes by JR, and about 20–25 minutes by car (via the Shiribeshi Expressway). The highway bus takes about 25–30 minutes between Otaru and Yoichi.

How can I get back after a tasting at the distillery?

You can't drive after a tasting. We recommend returning by JR from Yoichi Station (a 3-minute walk from the distillery) or by local bus. JR takes about 24 minutes to Otaru and the last train is fairly late at night, but check the exact time on the JR Hokkaido official website.

Do I need to book the bus?

The Highway Yoichi (highway bus) doesn't need a reservation; you can board on the day if it isn't full. But seats fill up easily in busy periods, so it's safer to go early. Local buses also don't need reservations.

What should I know if I go by car?

If you'll taste at the Nikka distillery, we don't recommend coming by car, since you can't drive after tasting. For sightseeing without tasting (orchards, wineries, the Space Museum and so on), a car widens your range. The Shiribeshi Expressway (Otaru-nishi IC to Yoichi IC) is fastest, at about 20–25 minutes.

Going beyond Yoichi (toward Shakotan and Niki)

Yoichi is also the gateway to the Shakotan Peninsula. There's no JR from Yoichi toward Shakotan (Cape Shakotan, Cape Kamui, Shimamui Coast), so you'll go by car or bus.

Local buses toward Shakotan (Hokkaido Chuo Bus's Shakotan Line) depart from in front of Yoichi Station. However, there are few buses, so check the timetable in advance on the Chuo Bus official website (https://www.chuo-bus.co.jp/). Realistically, plan a rental car trip to Shakotan for a day that doesn't include sea urchin or a distillery tasting in Yoichi.

The neighboring town of Niki also has many fruit orchards and wineries. Yoichi and Niki are less than 10 minutes apart by car, close enough to stop by during your Yoichi sightseeing. Niki Station is the next station from JR Yoichi Station.
