Otaru and Yoichi One-Day Model Course 2026 | A JR Train Trip Plan
・

Otaru and Yoichi are close — about 24 minutes apart by JR. This article introduces a model course for enjoying both Otaru and Yoichi in one day by train (JR). The biggest advantage of traveling by train is that you can get home safely by JR even after enjoying a whisky tasting at the Nikka Yoichi Distillery.
For driving routes and a wider range of sightseeing spots, see our other articles. This is a practical guide for anyone who wants to "go to Yoichi mainly by JR and on foot, and combine it with Otaru for a day of sightseeing".

Course Starting from Otaru (for Otaru Residents and Guests)
If you are staying in Otaru, or want to make a day trip just to Yoichi with Otaru as your base, it is even simpler.
- Leave Otaru at 9:00–9:30 → about 24 minutes to Yoichi → Nikka distillery (book a guided tour around 10:00)
- Spend 3–4 hours in Yoichi, leave after lunch → return to Otaru and carry on sightseeing in the afternoon
On a day trip from Otaru, travel time is short, so you can enjoy Yoichi at leisure and still get back to Otaru with time to spare.
Summer Plan — Add Fruit Picking (June to August)
If you visit during cherry season (June–July) or the peak of summer fruit, a day combining the distillery and a fruit farm is popular.
Sample course (summer version)
| Approx. time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 10:00–12:00 | Nikka distillery guided tour + tasting |
| 12:00–12:30 | Lunch at Kakizaki Shoten Kaisen Kobo |
| 13:00–15:00 | Cherry and fruit picking at Nitori Kanko Kajuen (a taxi is convenient to get to the farm) |
| From 15:30 | JR from Yoichi Station to Otaru or Sapporo |
The farms are some distance from JR Yoichi Station, so a taxi is the convenient way to get there. Call a taxi at Yoichi Station, or check whether the farm can arrange a ride back to Yoichi Station, for a smooth trip.
For details of Yoichi's fruit farms, see Yoichi Fruit Picking Guide 2026.
Autumn Plan — Add a Winery (September to October)
In grape harvest season (September–October), winery visits and grape picking are at their best.
Sample course (autumn version)
| Approx. time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 10:00–12:00 | Nikka distillery guided tour + tasting |
| 12:30–14:00 | Lunch at OcciGabi Winery (advance booking required; by car or taxi) |
| 14:30–16:00 | Free tasting and self-guided visit at Yoichi Wine Brewery |
| From 16:30 | Head home by JR from Yoichi Station |
The wineries are some distance from JR Yoichi Station, so you need a car or taxi. If you plan to taste, use JR or a taxi on the way back too. For details of the wineries, see Yoichi Winery Guide 2026.
A Money-Saving Ticket — JR One-Day Sanpo Ticket
The One-Day Sanpo Ticket issued by JR Hokkaido is an unlimited-ride ticket valid on weekends, public holidays and certain days. It covers the Hakodate Main Line (toward Otaru and Yoichi), so used well, it can save you money on transport.
Please check the 2026 valid days, price, where to buy it and the covered area on the JR Hokkaido official website (https://www.jrhokkaido.co.jp/)*.
Notes on Traveling by JR
Three things to know when going to Yoichi by train.
Train frequency
Otaru and Yoichi are connected by the JR Hakodate Main Line, but the number of trains per day is limited (in many time periods there is about one train an hour in each direction combined). Always check in advance how long you will stay in Yoichi and when your return train leaves.
Operation of the Hakodate Main Line (Yamasen)
JR Hokkaido is considering closing the Otaru–Oshamambe section of the Hakodate Main Line (known as the "Yamasen"). For the impact on the Otaru–Yoichi section and whether services will continue in 2026–27, please check JR Hokkaido's announcements*.

Getting around after a tasting
Never drive after a tasting. On a train trip that assumes JR, you can enjoy whisky without that worry. This is why people say "if you want to taste, take the train".
Other Yoichi Sights (If You Have Time)
If you have time to spare on a one-day course, or want to explore Yoichi in depth, consider the following spots.

| Yoichi Space Museum Space Dome | About 7 minutes' walk from JR Yoichi Station (in the roadside station) | Mid-April to end of November |
| Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya | Near JR Yoichi Station | April to early December |
