Sapporo to Otaru from 32 Minutes and ¥800 | JR, Bus & Rental Car Compared

・

Sapporo and Otaru are about 33.8km apart, and you have three ways to make the trip: JR train, highway bus or rental car. The JR Rapid Airport gets you there in as little as 32 minutes for ¥800, while the highway bus is slightly cheaper at ¥730, so the best choice depends on how you like to travel. This article explains the features of each option and how to choose, based on the latest information, including the April 2025 fare revision and the end of the S-Kippu ticket in March 2026.

This page serves as a "Sapporo → Otaru access hub," giving you an overview of the three main options and how to choose between them. For details on specific situations (early-morning departures, after the last train, traveling with kids, lots of luggage) or on individual options (the JR Rapid Airport on its own, an in-depth highway bus comparison, driving the Sasson Expressway), follow the links to individual articles in the "Related articles" section at the end of this page. For a broader overview, see also the "Complete Guide to Getting to Otaru" (the fastest, cheapest and easiest ways from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport; coming soon).

Between Sapporo and Otaru, the JR Hakodate Main Line (Rapid Airport) is the fastest and most frequent option. The rapid train takes about 32–36 minutes, and the adult fare is ¥800 (after the April 1, 2025 revision). With around three trains an hour, you can simply turn up and ride without any extra planning.

The "Kosoku Otaru-go" highway bus costs ¥730, ¥70 cheaper, and runs often (about 70 trips a day via Maruyama), but it takes 55–63 minutes, longer than JR, and boarding is limited to the bus terminal in front of the station. By rental car, you can arrive in 24 minutes using the expressway (Sasson Expressway), but you'll pay around ¥1,240 in tolls plus parking.

Option Travel time Fare (adult, one way) Frequency (daytime)
JR Rapid Airport About 32–36 min ¥800 3 per hour
JR local train About 50–60 min ¥800 2–3 per hour
Highway bus (via Maruyama) About 63 min ¥730 About 70 per day

JR Hakodate Main Line: The Fastest, Most Frequent Option

The JR Hakodate Main Line is the main route for travel between Sapporo and Otaru. The Rapid Airport runs between New Chitose Airport and Otaru, stopping at Soen, Kotoni, Teine, Inaho, Hoshioki, Hoshimi, Zenibako, Asari, Otaru-Chikko and Minami-Otaru before reaching Otaru. Special Rapid trains make fewer stops, and some services are faster.

Fares (after the April 1, 2025 revision)

Category One way Round trip
Adult ¥800 ¥1,600
Child ¥400 ¥800

You can tap in with an IC card (any of Japan's transit IC cards, such as Kitaca, Suica, PASMO or ICOCA). Overseas visitors who pick up a Welcome Suica in Japan can ride without buying anything else.

Rapid Airport Car 4 uSeat (reserved seats)

Car 4 is the "uSeat" car, where you can reserve a seat for an extra charge. It normally costs ¥1,000 (¥500 for children), but through Ekinet (JR East's online booking service) there is a ticketless option that drops the price to ¥300, available in the evening only. Non-reserved cars get crowded during Golden Week, the busy summer season and the morning and evening rush, so booking ahead is a good idea if you want to be sure of a seat.

The main train types are the 733 series (bench-style seating along the sides, large luggage space, barrier-free) and the 721 series (seats facing forward/backward).

Rental Car: Best When Combined with Shakotan or Asarigawa

This image was generated by AI for illustrative purposes.

A rental car really comes into its own on an itinerary that combines Otaru with the Shakotan Peninsula or Asarigawa Onsen, rather than Otaru alone. It's a good option if you want a round trip that includes areas that are hard to reach by public transportation.

Via the expressway (Sasson Expressway, E5A)

Item Details
Route Sapporo-Kita IC → Sapporo-Nishi IC → Otaru IC
Distance 30.7km
Travel time About 24 min (without traffic)
Tolls Around ¥1,240 (same with or without ETC; varies by route and vehicle type)

Note that on top of the roughly ¥1,240 in tolls (Sapporo-Kita IC → Otaru IC), you'll also pay for gas. Since gas costs depend on the vehicle and the distance driven, it's worth working out the total cost before renting, and if you're traveling as a group or with lots of luggage, checking the cost per person in advance.

Via local roads (Route 5)

Item Details
Distance About 40km
Travel time About 70 min (90–100+ min in heavy traffic)
Cost Free

Local roads let you enjoy the scenery along Ishikari Bay, but be aware that traffic jams are common during the morning commute and Golden Week, making travel times hard to predict.

FAQ

Here are the questions travelers ask most often when planning the trip between Sapporo and Otaru. Use them as a guide if you can't decide how to get there.

Q. What's the cheapest way to go?

The "Kosoku Otaru-go" highway bus is the cheapest at ¥730 one way. The difference from the JR Hakodate Main Line (¥800) is just ¥70, or ¥140 for a round trip. The bus is especially convenient if you're starting near a bus stop, or if you want to take advantage of its frequent service to choose your departure time freely.

Q. What's the fastest way to go?

The JR Rapid Airport is the fastest. It takes about 32–36 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. With around three trains an hour, it's also easy to fit into your schedule.

Q. What if I have a lot of luggage?

The 733 series trains used on the JR Rapid Airport have large luggage spaces, so they're easy to board with a suitcase. Otaru Station also has coin lockers, so another good option is to leave your bags there when you arrive and then head out sightseeing. If you're traveling as a group, you could also consider putting all your luggage in the trunk of a rental car.

Q. Which option is best in winter (snow season)?

In winter (roughly November to March), icy and snowy roads are a concern, so JR or the highway bus is the safer choice. JR runs relatively reliably even in snow. The highway bus can take longer depending on road conditions (about 68 minutes via Maruyama is the winter guideline), so leave plenty of time in your schedule. If you drive a rental car, studless winter tires are a must, and watch out for traffic jams when it snows.

Q. What time should I leave for a day trip?

Otaru's sightseeing areas (the canal and Sakaimachi Street) start getting busier around 10 a.m. If you leave on a JR train in the 9 a.m. hour, it's easier to see the main sights while it's still quiet. Return services run until the 10 p.m. hour, so you can enjoy the evening illumination of the Otaru Canal before heading back.

Getting Around After You Arrive in Otaru

This image was generated by AI for illustrative purposes.

JR Otaru Station is the starting point for the sightseeing areas. The Otaru Canal (Asakusa Bridge) is about a 10–12 minute walk, and Sakaimachi Street (Märchen Intersection) is about a 10–15 minute walk, so the whole core area is within 15 minutes on foot.

With an e-bike, you can easily cover more ground even in hilly Otaru. Renting a bike at COTARU (3-1-1 Inaho, Otaru, Hokkaido 047-0032 / about a 5-minute walk from Otaru Station) makes it easy to reach the former Temiya Line and the Mt. Tengu area. For seasonal flowers along the former Temiya Line, see our Former Temiya Line Tulip Guide.
