Sapporo to Otaru on the JR Rapid Airport: Complete Guide | Times, Fares, Reserved Seats & How to Ride
・
If you're heading from Sapporo to Otaru, the Rapid Airport train on the JR Hakodate Main Line is the fastest and most convenient option. With trips as short as 32 minutes, an adult fare of ¥800 and three trains an hour, it makes connections easy to plan and lets you adjust your plans on the day. This guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Otaru on the Rapid Airport, from how to board to timetables, fares, u-Seat reserved seats and getting around after you arrive in Otaru.
1. How to Board from the JR Ticket Gates at Sapporo Station
JR Sapporo Station is Hokkaido's largest terminal, connected to the subway's Sapporo and Odori stations. To catch the Rapid Airport, go through the JR ticket gates and head to the platform.

Buying a ticket and going through the gates
Before boarding, buy a ticket from a ticket machine or have a transit IC card ready. A regular one-way ticket between Sapporo and Otaru costs ¥800 for adults. The ticket machines display instructions in Japanese and English, and you can choose your destination on the touch screen.
If you have an IC card (Kitaca, Suica, PASMO, ICOCA or any other nationwide transit IC card), you don't need a ticket: just tap the card on the reader at the gate. For overseas visitors, Welcome Suica, available at the airport and in the city, is a handy option.
Finding your platform
The Rapid Airport departs from the Hakodate Main Line platforms at JR Sapporo Station. Once through the gates, follow the signs for "Hakodate Main Line / for Otaru." Departure times, destinations and car numbers are shown on the electronic boards on the platform.
Otaru-bound Rapid Airport trains run through from New Chitose Airport or from the Asahikawa and Tomakomai directions. Board a train whose destination display shows "Otaru."
Why you don't need to worry about fare adjustments
With an IC card, your fare is settled automatically when you exit, so there's no risk of underpaying. If you buy a ticket, you choose your destination when buying, so the ticket is valid all the way to Otaru Station.
2. Rapid Airport Timetable and Travel Time
The Rapid Airport runs on the JR Hakodate Main Line, linking New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Otaru. During the day there are about three trains an hour, so in most cases you won't wait more than 20 minutes for the next one.
Approximate travel times
| Route | Rapid Airport | Local train |
|---|---|---|
| Sapporo → Otaru | About 32–36 min | About 50–60 min |
| Otaru → Sapporo | About 32–36 min | About 50–60 min |
Rapid Airport services marked "Special Rapid" stop at fewer stations and take less time. Check the train type on the departure board before you board.
First and last trains (Sapporo → Otaru, approximate)
| Type | Time (for reference) |
|---|---|
| First train (local) | Departs 6:09 (arrives Otaru 6:59) *for reference only; check JR's official information |
| Rapid Airport, first trains | From the 6:00 hour |
| Rapid Airport, last trains | Running until the 22:00 hour |
Before you set off, always check the latest times on the JR Hokkaido official website (jrhokkaido.co.jp) or a JR timetable app. Actual times may change due to timetable revisions or extra trains.
Service frequency
During the day, trains run about every 20 minutes, so waits are short and planning is easy. Extra trains may be added during the morning commute (7:00–9:59) and the evening rush (17:00–19:59). Service is less frequent at quieter times such as late at night, so it's a good idea to check your return train in advance.
3. Fares and Discount Tickets
Regular fares (revised April 1, 2025)
| Category | One way | Round trip |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥800 | ¥1,600 |
| Child (6–11) | ¥400 | ¥800 |
The Sapporo–Otaru fare was revised to the current amount in JR Hokkaido's fare revision on April 1, 2025. Please check the latest fares on the JR Hokkaido official website when you buy.
S-Kippu (discontinued March 2026)
The S-Kippu, a discounted round-trip ticket for non-reserved seats, was discontinued on March 8, 2026. For any replacement product, please check JR Hokkaido's official announcements.
Eki-net ticketless u-Seat
Through Eki-net (JR East's online reservation service), you can buy ticketless u-Seat reserved seats in Car 4 of the Rapid Airport. For travel from April 1 to November 30, 2026, an evening-only offer reduces the usual ¥840 to ¥300 (the ¥800 basic fare is charged separately). Eligible times and trains may change, so check the latest information on the official Eki-net website.
Hokkaido Rail Pass (for overseas visitors)
This pass gives foreign visitors (short-term visitors) unlimited travel on all JR Hokkaido lines. It can be used for non-reserved seats on the Hakodate Main Line and the Rapid Airport.
| Validity | Price (bought in advance) | Price (bought in Japan) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days | ¥22,000 | ¥23,000 |
| 7 days | ¥28,000 | ¥29,000 |
| 10 days | ¥37,000 | ¥38,000 |
A separate reserved-seat fee is required for the u-Seat. The pass is sold through JR-EAST Train Reservation (online), travel agencies overseas, and major stations in Hokkaido (passport required).
JAPAN RAIL PASS (nationwide)
The nationwide JR pass for foreign tourists also covers non-reserved seats on the Hakodate Main Line and the Rapid Airport. Here too, a separate reserved-seat fee is required for the u-Seat.
4. u-Seat (Reserved) vs Non-Reserved Seats
The Rapid Airport has two kinds of seating: regular non-reserved seats, and u-Seat reserved seats in Car 4. Choose according to your travel style and how crowded it is.

This image was generated by AI for illustrative purposes.
Non-reserved seats
The biggest advantage of non-reserved seats is that there's no extra charge. You can sit anywhere that's free, but during Golden Week, the busy summer season and the morning and evening peaks, the train may be too crowded to get a seat. Since the ride is fairly short (32–36 minutes), many travelers won't mind standing.
u-Seat
The u-Seat, in Car 4, is a reserved-seat service that guarantees you an assigned seat for an extra ¥840.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Car | Car 4 |
| Extra charge | ¥840 (adult) / ¥500 (child) |
| How to book | Eki-net, Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket offices, reserved-seat ticket machines |
| Facilities | Assigned seat, large luggage area |
When the u-Seat makes sense
- Traveling during busy periods such as Golden Week, Obon or the New Year holidays
- Riding during the morning and evening rush (7:00–9:59 and 17:00–19:59)
- Bringing a suitcase or other large luggage
- Wanting a guaranteed seat so you can rest during the ride
Booking for less on Eki-net
With Eki-net's ticketless service, there's an evening-only offer that brings the usual ¥840 u-Seat down to ¥300 (the ¥800 basic fare is charged separately). The eligible times are limited, but it's useful when returning from Otaru to Sapporo in the evening. You'll need to register with Eki-net (free), so it's best to do that before your trip.
5. Getting Around After Arriving at Otaru Station
