7 Cherry Blossom Spots in Otaru | Best Viewing Times and Hanami Courses [2026]

・

In 2026, Otaru's cherry blossoms are forecast to open on April 25 and reach full bloom on April 29, more than 10 days earlier than usual. Led by Temiya Park and Otaru Park, more than about 3,000 cherry trees bloom across the city. In this article, our local staff introduce seven carefully chosen hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spots in Otaru with their best viewing times and access, plus three hanami courses by bicycle that you won't find in any other guide.

What makes Otaru's cherry blossoms special, and the 2026 viewing season

Otaru's cherry blossoms are usually at their best from early to mid-May. The normal pattern is that they bloom about a week later than Sapporo's. In 2026, however, a warm trend means blooming is forecast to be more than 10 days earlier than normal.

  • Otaru Park forecast: blooming April 25 → full bloom April 29 → falling petals around May 4
  • Sapporo (for reference): blooming April 16 → full bloom April 20

In other words, the timing is "full bloom in Otaru just as the petals start falling in Sapporo." The first half of Golden Week looks like the peak viewing time.

The cherry varieties you can see in Otaru are diverse, including Ezo-yamazakura (Sargent cherry), Somei-yoshino, Chishima-zakura (Kuril cherry) and Yae-zakura (double-flowered cherry). And because blooming times shift by location, a charm unique to Otaru is that you can enjoy cherry blossoms for about three weeks, from the early blossoms at Märchen Crossroads to the late-blooming Tengu-zakura.

Seven recommended cherry blossom spots

① Temiya Park: Otaru's signature cherry blossom spot (about 700 trees)

Cherry blossoms at Temiya Park and the view over Otaru Bay

When it comes to cherry blossoms in Otaru, this is the place to start. Its biggest appeal is the view from the heights over Otaru Bay through the blossoms. With many varieties, Ezo-yamazakura, Somei-yoshino, Chishima-zakura and Yae-zakura, you can enjoy it as they bloom one after another.

At about 19.7 ha (about four Tokyo Domes), it is vast, and you can stroll it together with the adjoining Temiya Greening Botanical Garden. The park also has the northernmost chestnut forest (about 700 trees), and the scenery woven by cherry blossoms and the chestnut forest is unique to Otaru.

📷 Photo spot: From the viewing area on the heights, you can fit cherry blossoms, Otaru Bay and blue sky into one shot. Morning, with the sun behind you, is recommended.

Spot information - 📍 Address: 2-4, 5 and others, Temiya, Otaru, Hokkaido - 🕐 Open: Year-round, all day - 💰 Admission: Free - 🅿 Parking: About 52 spaces (free) - 🚶 Access: About 20 min walk from JR Otaru Station / about 10 min walk from the "Temiya" bus stop - 🌸 Best time: Usually early to mid-May / expected late April in 2026

② Otaru Park: the classic hanami spot for locals (about 650 trees)

For Otaru residents, "hanami" means this park. Located on heights with views through the blossoms over Otaru's townscape and port, it has about 650 Somei-yoshino, Ezo-yamazakura and double-flowered cherry trees.

Another welcome point is its good facilities, with about 230 parking spaces (free) and four toilets (including wheelchair-accessible ones). Families can relax here too. It is also famous for azaleas, Otaru's city flower, so you can keep enjoying flowers for a while after the cherry blossoms fall.

📷 Photo spot: Photograph the blossoms from the upper part of the park with the townscape and port behind. The soft evening light is also recommended.

Spot information - 📍 Address: Hanazono 5-chome, Otaru, Hokkaido - 🕐 Open: 24 hours, free - 🅿 Parking: About 230 spaces (free) - 🚶 Access: About 20 min walk from JR Otaru Station / about 10 min from Otaru IC on the Sapporo-Otaru Expressway - 🌸 Best time: Usually late April to early May / in 2026 blooming 4/25, full bloom 4/29

③ Suitengu Shrine: a hidden gem with superb views of blossoms and the port (locals' pick)

A historic shrine founded in 1859. It stands on the heights at the top of "Gaijin-zaka," with views over Otaru Port, the Sea of Japan and the houses of this hilly town. It is such a superb viewpoint that it has been designated an Important Viewpoint by Otaru City.

Somei-yoshino, double-flowered cherries and Ezo-yamazakura bloom here, and locals know it as a photogenic spot where you can frame cherry blossoms and the port together. Yet there are few tourists, making it a hidden gem for quiet hanami.

📷 Photo spot: The classic composition looks from the grounds toward the port. The contrast of pink blossoms and blue sea stands out.

Spot information - 📍 Address: Aioi-cho, Otaru, Hokkaido - 🚶 Access: About 10 min walk from JR Otaru Station or Minami-Otaru Station - 🌸 Best time: Early to mid-May - 💡 Hidden-gem rating: ★★★ (few tourists, calm hanami)

④ Nagahashi Naebo Park: one of the city's largest numbers of trees (about 1,500)

About 1,500 cherry trees, mainly Ezo-yamazakura, bloom across this vast forest park. Because the trees are spread throughout the park, you can enjoy the blossoms while walking in nature as if on a hike.

It is also known as a habitat of the black woodpecker, a natural monument, so if you're lucky you may see cherry blossoms and wild birds together. It has one of the largest numbers of trees in Otaru, yet because it is a little away from the city center it is relatively quiet.

Spot information - 📍 Address: 1-53 Saiwai, Otaru, Hokkaido - 🅿 Parking: 40 spaces - 🌸 Best time: Early to mid-May - 💡 Recommended for: Nature lovers and photographers

⑤ Tenjoji Temple: the contrast of the six Jizo statues and cherry blossoms (a hidden gem near Mt. Tengu)

A temple on the road from Irifune Jujigai toward Mt. Tengu. Its highlight is the unique scenery of about 30 Somei-yoshino trees contrasting with the six Jizo statues and a Kannon of maternal love. It is a hidden spot that is also listed among Otaru City's official "cherry blossom highlights."

We also recommend combining it with the Mt. Tengu Ropeway. In 2026 its summer operation starts on April 25, perfect for the cherry blossom season. At the summit stands the "Tengu-zakura," over 100 years old, known as the latest-blooming solitary cherry tree in Hokkaido.

Spot information - 📍 Address: Irifune, Otaru (from Irifune Jujigai toward Mt. Tengu) - 🚶 Access: About 1 min walk from the Chuo Bus "Kita Gas-mae" stop / about 3 min walk from the "Irifune 2-chome" stop - 🌸 Best time: Early May Mt. Tengu Ropeway - 🕐 Summer operation: April 25 – November 3, 2026 (up 9:00–20:48 / down 9:00–21:00) - 💰 Adults ¥1,800 round trip (¥1,080 one way) / children ¥900 round trip (¥540 one way) - 🌸 Summit "Tengu-zakura": over 100 years old, the latest-blooming solitary cherry tree in Hokkaido

⑥ Around the former Temiya Line: cherry blossoms along a stroll

A walking path making use of an abandoned railway about 1.6 km long. Rather than a famous cherry blossom spot, it's a place to enjoy blossoms along a walk. There is a large cherry tree in "Nidan Park" beside the tracks, popular as a photo spot where you can capture the rails and blossoms in one shot.

Note that the former Temiya Line is for pedestrians only, and you cannot ride a bicycle on it. If you come by bicycle, it's best to use the road running alongside and get off to walk at points that catch your eye. It is also better known for hydrangeas in early summer than for cherry blossoms, so it's worth revisiting from June onward.

Spot information - 📍 Address: Ironai 1-chome to Temiya 1-chome, Otaru - 🚶 Walk: About 1.6 km (about 20–30 min one way on foot) - ⚠ No cycling (pedestrians only) - 📷 Photo point: Around Nidan Park (blossoms × old tracks)

⑦ Around Asari Dam: a second hanami at a different time (for experienced riders)

The area around Asari Dam reaches its best after the cherry blossoms on the flatlands have fallen. The double-flowered cherries are especially splendid, at their best from mid- to late May, about 2–3 weeks later than in the city center.

From COTARU it is about 13 km with an elevation gain of about 232 m. There is a steep section on the Asari Sky Loop (loop bridge), so an e-assist bicycle is essential. For those not confident in their stamina, going by car is realistic. The saving grace is an exhilarating downhill ride on the way back.

We recommend a two-part hanami plan: "enjoy full bloom at Temiya Park, then go to Asari Dam 2–3 weeks later."

Spot information - 📍 Address: Around Asarigawa Onsen, Otaru - 🅿 Parking: Free (around the dam memorial hall and lakeside park), toilets available - 🌸 Best time: Mid- to late May (later than the flatlands) - 🚲 About 13 km from COTARU / elevation gain about 232 m / e-assist bicycle essential
