Early summer in Otaru (May–June) brings refreshing weather of 15–20°C, no rainy season, and far fewer crowds than at the peak. Otaru's tourist peak is August, when monthly visitor numbers reach about 850,000. Meanwhile, May sees about 550,000 (64% of the peak) and June about 710,000 (83%), so the crowds ease considerably. A feature of early summer is being able to enjoy the photo spots along the canal and street food on Sakaimachi Street without waiting.

In June, when the rainy season begins on Honshu, Hokkaido has no rainy season. Dry, pleasant weather continues, making it comfortable both on a bike and on foot. The table below shows normal values (1991–2020) from the Japan Meteorological Agency's Otaru station.

Item May June August (reference)

May highlights — cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, the former Temiya Line and spring events

May in Otaru starts with the last of the cherry blossoms, then passes the baton to fresh greenery and flower events. From mid-May, after the Golden Week bustle settles down, is the best time to stroll a quiet town at your leisure.

Golden Week 2026 runs from April 29 to May 6. In Otaru, cherry blossoms can usually be enjoyed until early May. At the famous cherry spots of Temiya Park (about 700 trees) and Otaru Park, blossoms may still remain in the first half of Golden Week. For details see 7 Otaru cherry blossom spots | Best time and viewing courses [2026].

You can check the location of Temiya Park on Google Maps. For detailed access, see the spot information in the article.

On the former Temiya Line, a disused railway walkway about 1.6 km long, tulips and lilacs bloom in mid-May, making it the most colorful time of the year. The walkway, with flower beds lining the tracks, is popular as a photo spot.

You can check the location of the former Temiya Line on Google Maps. For detailed travel times and access, see the spot information below.

June highlights — sea urchin season, the aquarium and Mt. Tengu

June in Otaru is when the opening of the Shakotan sea urchin season suddenly makes it feel like Hokkaido summer. The Mt. Tengu Ropeway and Otaru Aquarium in the Shukutsu area are also early-summer highlights.

The fishing season for "Shakotan sea urchin," a signature summer delicacy of Hokkaido, usually runs from June to August. Opening dates differ by fishing area; the earliest, off Bikuni and Furubira, begin fishing on June 1. The official 2026 opening date is to be announced by the Shakotan Fisheries Cooperative between late May and early June. Check the Shakotan Tourism Association (https://www.kanko-shakotan.jp/) for the latest information.

It takes about an hour and a half by car (about 71 km) from Otaru to Shakotan. You can enjoy freshly caught sea urchin bowls at eateries near the fishing ports such as "Misaki," "Rinkoso" and "Ushio."

Access note: buses are infrequent and require transfers, so a car or rental car is realistic. A day-trip drive based in Otaru is convenient.

Otaru Aquarium — the Shukutsu area, popular with families

"Otaru Aquarium" in the Shukutsu area is Otaru's signature year-round attraction. In June, the sea begins to warm and the outdoor shows get into full swing.

"Otaru Aquarium" in the Shukutsu area is in its regular season from March 14 to November 23, 2026. With dolphin shows, dramatic dives by Steller sea lions and penguin shows, it's a facility both children and adults can enjoy. In June, more visitors also head to the Shioya and Ranshima areas, marking the start of the summer season.

Early-summer rental bike model course

May–June is ideal for cycling for three reasons: temperature, weather and crowds. Here's a course that makes the most of this season's comfort to visit Otaru's highlights in half a day.

Temperatures of 12–20°C, neither too hot nor too cold, continue, and with no rainy season, Hokkaido has a high rate of sunny days even while Honshu is in its rainy season. Sunset is late, around 19:00, so you have plenty of time.

This is a half-day course starting from COTARU (Otaru Canal area) and visiting the former Temiya Line, Temiya Park and the Shukutsu area. For a detailed course explanation, see the rental bike half-day model course.

COTARU (start) ↓ About 5 min Otaru Canal (canal-side stroll and photos) ↓ About 10 min Sakaimachi Street (glass workshops and sweets) ↓ About 5 min Former Temiya Line (ride along the fresh green walkway) ↓ About 10 min Temiya Park (overlook the port town from the observation deck) ↓ About 20 min Shukutsu area (Otaru Aquarium, herring mansion) ↓ About 25 min COTARU (return)

Slope point: there is an uphill between Temiya and Shukutsu. An e-bike makes it an easy climb. COTARU also has e-bikes.
