Spot 1: Otaru Canal Gas Lamps & Illuminations (Year-Round)

This is the signature night view of Otaru.

Along the walking path between Asakusa Bridge and Chuo Bridge (about 500m), you can enjoy the gas lamps and the illuminated warehouses. The walk is free, with no admission limits. The scenery changes with the seasons and the weather, so it feels fresh no matter how many times you visit.

The stone walls of the warehouses and the gas lamps reflected on the water are the defining image of Otaru at night. In winter (November to March) especially, the snow-covered warehouses and gas lamps create a magical scene that draws many travelers.

Special Display: Blue Canal Illuminations (Usually 11/1 to 1/31)

This is the illumination that attracts the most attention in winter Otaru.

Every year from around November 1 to January 31, the warehouses along Otaru Canal are lit with blue LED light (based on 2025). The usual orange glow of the gas lamps gives way to a dreamy world of blue.

The illuminations run from sunset to 22:30. Please check the official website for the official start date for 2026–2027.

Spot 2: Mt. Tengu Observatory & Ropeway (Night View)

This viewpoint is known as one of Hokkaido's three great night views.

You can take in a 360-degree panoramic night view over Otaru Port, the city and Ishikari Bay. You reach the summit by ropeway, and there is an observation deck and a restaurant at the top.

Spot 3: Historic Building Illuminations (Sakaimachi & Central Area, Year-Round)

Here you can enjoy Otaru's Meiji- and Taisho-era architecture at night.

Historic buildings such as the former Bank of Japan Otaru Branch (Museum of Finance), the former NYK (Nippon Yusen) Otaru Branch and the former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch are lit from the outside from sunset until around 22:30. Viewing the exteriors is free.

Access

10–15 minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station (varies by building). They are all within walking distance of the canal walking path.

Spot 4: Former Temiya Line Walking Path (at Night)

Walking this disused Meiji-era railway line at night is a quiet, peaceful experience.

The old tracks of the former Temiya Line, running from Ironai 2-chome toward Temiya (near Otaru Art Base), have permanent night lighting. Please check the official website for exact lighting hours and coverage.

During the Otaru Snow Light Path festival every February, the former Temiya Line is decorated with snow candles (17:00–21:00), turning it into the most magical walk of the year. Outside the festival period, night walks are at your own risk (please watch your footing).

Spot 5: Sakaimachi Street at Night (Japanese Umbrella Illuminations & Year-Round Evening Atmosphere)

Sakaimachi Street feels completely different by day and by night.

In summer, from July 1 to September 6, the street hosts Japanese umbrella illuminations (sunset to 22:30), creating a unique night scene of traditional umbrellas lined up along a street of Western-style buildings. On ordinary evenings outside summer, some glass workshops and music box shops may stay open at night. However, evening hours vary from shop to shop on Sakaimachi Street, and most tend to be closed after 21:00. Please check the latest information locally.

Night Photography Tips

Here are a few tips for photographing Otaru at night.

  • Best canal spot: The classic angle is from the railing of Asakusa Bridge, framing the row of warehouses
  • Best time to shoot: During the magic hour right after sunset (when the sky turns bluish), the contrast between the gas lamps and the sky is especially beautiful
  • Using a tripod: Many people use tripods on the bridges and walking path around the canal. When it's crowded, please make sure you don't block other people
  • Staying warm in winter: At night in Otaru (especially November to March), the wind is cold and it feels colder than the actual temperature. It's easy not to notice the cold while you're focused on shooting, so dress very warmly

Summary: Otaru's Nights Are Enjoyable All Year Round

Otaru's night views aren't just about the Snow Light Path in February.

  • Year-round: The canal gas lamps and historic building illuminations are free to enjoy
  • Summer (April to November): Add the Mt. Tengu night view and the Japanese umbrella illuminations (July to September)
  • Winter (November to January): The Blue Canal's blue light colors the canal
  • February: The Snow Light Path turns the whole city into a magical winter night

If you're planning an evening in Otaru, use the monthly illumination calendar to choose spots that match when you'll be visiting.
