Otaru with Kids: Family Sightseeing 2026 with 2 One-Day Courses

・

Here are two model courses for families with kids to enjoy a full day in Otaru: a Shukutsu & aquarium course and a museum & city center course. Each comes with transportation, time needed and price guidelines.

The Short Answer: How to Plan Otaru with Kids

Which course suits you depends on your children's ages and interests. Use the table below to pick the right course for your kids.

Type Recommended course Why
Kids who love animals and the sea Course A (Shukutsu & aquarium) Plenty of shows, on a big outdoor scale
Kids who love vehicles and machines Course B (museum) Lots of steam locomotives and railway exhibits
Little ones (preschool to early elementary) Course A (aquarium-focused) Preschool rates available, and the shows keep them entertained
Families who also enjoy history and culture Course B Easy to combine the museum with canal sightseeing

Both courses can be done by bus and on foot. A rental car makes getting around more efficient, but these plans work fine on public transportation too.

Popular Spots for Families in Otaru

Before the courses, let's go over the basics of the main spots.

Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu)

Otaru Aquarium is the most important spot for families visiting Otaru. It has a full lineup of dolphin, Steller sea lion and penguin shows, and the "Cliff Show," with black-tailed gulls swirling above the cliffs, is a powerful sight you won't see at other aquariums.

It's relatively quiet in the 9 o'clock hour right after opening, so we recommend arriving early.

In winter, the Snow Park (sledding and tubing) is busy, but this article focuses on visits from summer to fall.

The Otaru Museum has two sites: the Main Building and the Canal Building. Both offer free admission for junior high school students and younger, making them great value for families.

The Main Building (right by JR Otaru City Museum-mae Station) covers the history of Hokkaido's railways, and its highlight is a real steam locomotive (the Iron Horse). It's especially recommended for kids who love trains.

The Canal Building (beside Otaru Canal) is housed in the stone building of the former Otaru Warehouse and displays materials on Otaru's nature and history.

Getting Around: Summary

Here's the transportation information worth checking in advance when sightseeing with kids.

Route Transportation Approx. time
Otaru Station → Aquarium (Shukutsu) Local bus (bound for Shukutsu) About 30 min
Otaru Station → Tenguyama Local bus (bound for Tenguyama) About 15 min
Otaru Station → Museum Main Building JR (Otaru City Museum-mae Station) About 5 min (one stop)
Within the city (canal, Sakaimachi) On foot 10–20 min

Check bus times and fares on the Hokkaido Chuo Bus official website in advance.

Tips for Sightseeing with a Stroller

Sakaimachi Street has cobblestone roads and slopes. There may be times when you need to fold your stroller, so using a baby carrier as well or bringing a lightweight stroller makes it easier to get around. Strollers are allowed inside the aquarium and museum, but the aisles can be narrow when it's crowded.

Rainy Day Backup Plan

If it suddenly rains, Course B is mostly indoors and easy to manage. The museum and Canal Building are both indoor facilities, and you can also spend time inside at LeTAO and Kitaichi Hall on Sakaimachi Street.

Free and Low-Cost Spots for Kids

Otaru has plenty of free and low-cost facilities for children.

Facility Children's price
Otaru Museum Main Building & Canal Building Free for junior high and younger
Otaru Herring Mansion Free for high school and younger
Temiya Cave Preservation Museum Free for junior high and younger
Tenguyama Ropeway Preschoolers: one free per paying adult
Otaru Aquarium Preschoolers (3–5) ¥350, children (6–15) ¥700

By combining free facilities, even a family of four can enjoy a full day at a fairly reasonable cost.

Summary: Choose a Course Based on What Your Kids Love

For family sightseeing in Otaru, Course A centered on Shukutsu and the aquarium suits kids who love animals and shows, while Course B centered on the museum suits kids who love vehicles and history.

  • Course A: Aquarium shows → exploring Shukutsu → Sakaimachi Street in the city center
  • Course B: Museum railway exhibits → Sankaku Market → the canal → Sakaimachi Street

Both courses can be combined with the Tenguyama Ropeway. Buying it as a combo with the aquarium saves money, so we recommend checking whether combo tickets are available in advance.
