Hokkaido Cherry Picking 2026 | 6 Orchards in Niki and Yoichi with Price Comparison
・

Hokkaido's Shiribeshi area (Niki, Yoichi, Akaigawa) is one of Japan's leading cherry-growing regions, where you can enjoy cherry picking from late June to mid-July. Many orchards offer all-you-can-eat with no time limit, and a big attraction is that you can easily visit on a day trip from Otaru by the JR Hakodate Main Line. This article compares six orchards, mainly in Niki and Yoichi, by price, season and whether you need a reservation, and also introduces a model route from Otaru.
Hokkaido's cherry-growing areas and the basics of varieties
The Shiribeshi area is where cherry growing is most active in Hokkaido, and Niki Town alone has 16 tourist orchards. In Hokkaido, known as Japan's second-largest cherry producer after Yamagata Prefecture, Yoichi, Niki and Akaigawa are the especially central growing areas.
The harvest season is usually from late June to mid-July, though it shifts with variety and weather. Check each orchard's official announcement around June for its 2026 opening day.
Here are the main varieties you can enjoy in Hokkaido and when they're in season. Seasons differ by variety, so the varieties you can find change with when you visit.
| Variety | Harvest time (guide) | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Satonishiki | Late June to early July | The classic variety with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. Bright red |
| Napoleon | From late June | Firm flesh with a satisfying bite. Pale yellow to red |
| Benishuho | From July | Late-ripening, large and very sweet. Deep red with strong sweetness |
| Nanyo | Late June to July | Extra-large and pale yellow. Grown at orchards such as Kokaen (Niki) |
| Summit | From July | A large variety originally from Canada. Grown at orchards such as Nitori Tourist Orchard |
To enjoy the early Satonishiki, aim for late June; to go for the large, very sweet Benishuho, aim for July.
Note: Prices, opening seasons and reservation requirements change every year. Check each orchard's official website or phone before your visit.

Options in Akaigawa Village and near Sapporo
Here we also introduce Akaigawa Village, a Shiribeshi cherry area alongside Yoichi and Niki, and an orchard near Sapporo. Access and features differ greatly by area.
Akaigawa Village is a farming area spread across a caldera. It is about 30–40 minutes by car from Otaru, but there is no railway, so you must go by car. As of our research (May 2026), we could not confirm any public information on cherry picking at tourist orchards there, so if you visit, check with the Akaigawa Tourism Association in advance.
Hakkenzan Orchard (near Sapporo, for reference)
Located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, about 10 minutes by car from Jozankei. It is a multi-fruit orchard where you can pick various fruits besides cherries, with cherry harvest roughly from early to mid-July.

Recommended orchards by travel style
Use this to help choose an orchard to suit your travel style. Several orchards are clustered in Niki Town, so you can also plan a route visiting two, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
| Who | Recommended orchard | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Families with infants | Ohnoen (Niki) | Preschoolers free, organically grown for peace of mind |
| Rainy or uncertain weather | Kokaen (Niki) | Fully equipped rain-shelter greenhouses, pick in any weather |
| Couples and groups of women | Nakai Tourist Orchard (Yoichi) | An orchard with superb views of the Sea of Japan |
| Want to try many varieties | Nitori Tourist Orchard (Yoichi) | Over 10 varieties, with a picking course option too |
| Large groups and tours | Sakuranboyama Tourist Orchard (Niki) | Largest scale, group discount for 20 or more |
| Want to start early | Sakuranboyama Tourist Orchard (Niki) | Opens at 8:00, the earliest in the area |
If several needs overlap, a route combining Kokaen and Ohnoen within Niki Town is also efficient.
A day-trip model route from Otaru and what to bring
Here is how to enjoy cherry picking as a day trip from Otaru. Combining a Yoichi orchard with Otaru sightseeing makes a full plan with minimal travel time.
Using the Yoichi course from Otaru as an example, the day goes like this.
- Morning — Rent a COTARU bicycle in Otaru and tour the Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street 2. Late morning — Return the bicycle to COTARU and walk to Otaru Station 3. Around noon — Take the JR Hakodate Main Line to Yoichi Station (about 25 min, ¥470) 4. Afternoon — Switch to a taxi or rental car at Yoichi Station and head to the orchard (about 5–10 min by car) 5. Around 14:00–16:00 — Enjoy cherry picking to your heart's content (allow 1–2 hours for all-you-can-eat) 6. Evening — Return to Otaru by JR from Yoichi Station
If you're heading for an orchard in Niki Town, use Niki Station, the stop after Yoichi. Check the Otaru–Niki fare on the JR Hokkaido official website (*2026 fare, MUST).
You'll walk on outdoor slopes at the orchards, so don't forget to prepare the following on the day.
- Clothes you don't mind getting dirty and comfortable sneakers (orchards have dirt slopes and grass)
- A hat and sunscreen (even in Hokkaido in June and July, many days have strong sunshine)
- Insect repellent (a must, as orchards are outdoors)
- Cash (many orchards take admission in cash only; checking in advance is recommended)
- A cooler bag (handy if you buy by weight or take some home)
- If you have children, be sure to bring a change of clothes and wet wipes
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Here are the questions we're most often asked when people plan cherry picking.
Q1. Do I need a reservation for cherry picking?
At most orchards, individual visitors don't need a reservation and can enter directly on the day. Many orchards ask groups or multiple parties to contact them in advance. In busy seasons such as the July holidays, try to arrive early.
Q2. Can I go cherry picking on a rainy day?
It depends on the orchard. Kokaen in Niki Town is fully equipped with rain-shelter greenhouses, so you can pick regardless of the weather. Other orchards may close or reduce operations in the rain, so we recommend checking the official website or phoning on the morning of your visit.
Q3. Can children enjoy it too?
Almost every orchard has child and infant prices. Ohnoen (Niki) is free for preschoolers, and many orchards are all-you-can-eat with no time limit, so children can enjoy it at their own pace. Tasting first to find a favorite variety and then picking is an especially fun experience for children.
Q4. Can I get there from Otaru without a car?
You can reach Yoichi and Niki by the JR Hakodate Main Line. However, from each station to the orchards, a taxi or rental car is the realistic choice (many orchards are hard to reach on foot). Akaigawa has no railway, so you must go by car.
Q5. When are Hokkaido cherries in season?
In the Shiribeshi area, the harvest season is usually from late June to mid-July. It differs by variety: Satonishiki peaks from late June to early July, and Benishuho mainly in July. Check each orchard and JA Yoichi's official announcements (expected around June) for the exact 2026 opening days.
Summary: combine it with Otaru sightseeing with COTARU
Cherry picking in the Shiribeshi area (Niki, Yoichi) appeals with many all-you-can-eat orchards with no time limit and easy access by the JR Hakodate Main Line. Here's a summary of how to choose an orchard.
- Scale and early starts → Sakuranboyama Tourist Orchard (Niki, adults ¥1,100, opens 8:00)
- Worry-free in the rain → Kokaen (Niki, fully equipped rain-shelter greenhouses)
- With preschoolers → Ohnoen (Niki, preschoolers free, organic farming)
- Superb views and many varieties → Nitori Tourist Orchard or Nakai Tourist Orchard (Yoichi)
The Yoichi area is also known for wineries and seafood. You can plan sightseeing that includes strolling around Yoichi after cherry picking, or enjoying the food culture of Yoichi, known for its whisky and wine. A guide to Yoichi fruit and wine is planned as the SW-06 article (scheduled for June 2026).
Combined with Otaru sightseeing, you get a full plan that lets you enjoy both cherry picking and a town walk in one day.
Enjoy Otaru sightseeing with COTARU
Before setting off for cherry picking, why not first tour Otaru by bicycle? With a COTARU rental bicycle, you can visit highlights such as the Otaru Canal, Sakaimachi Street and the former Temiya Line at your own pace. When you're done sightseeing, return the bicycle to COTARU and catch the Hakodate Main Line from JR Otaru Station toward Yoichi and Niki.
Otaru to Yoichi is convenient, at as little as about 25 minutes for ¥470. For details of COTARU rental bicycles, see the official website.
