[2026] Otaru Golden Week Guide | Crowds, Parking and Quiet Times

・

Are you hesitating because "Otaru is crowded during Golden Week"? It's true that Golden Week brings some of the biggest crowds in Hokkaido to Otaru, but just by planning your timing and transport, you can enjoy sightseeing while avoiding most of the crowds. As a local business open year-round in Otaru, all of us at COTARU feel the Golden Week crowds firsthand every year. This article shares our "local's strategy" based on that experience.

Golden Week 2026 runs for 8 days, from April 29 (Wed, Showa Day) to May 6 (Wed, substitute holiday). Otaru is one of Hokkaido's top tourist destinations, drawing many visitors from inside and outside Hokkaido every year in this season.

Based on what COTARU staff have experienced, the expected crowds roughly follow this pattern.

Period Crowd trend How crowded it feels
4/29 (Wed) – 4/30 (Thu) Somewhat busy (warm-up) Crowded but relatively easy to move
5/1 (Fri) – 5/2 (Sat) Busy Crowded, concentrated around midday
5/3 (Sun) – 5/5 (Tue) Peak The canal and Sakaimachi are packed at midday
5/6 (Wed) Calming down Relatively smooth

The weather is covered in detail in a separate article, "[2026] Otaru May weather and what to wear," but Otaru during Golden Week is characterized by large temperature swings: highs of 15–22°C and around 10°C in the mornings and evenings. A light jacket or windbreaker is a must.

Crowd peaks and times of day

Your experience of Otaru's Golden Week crowds changes greatly depending on "when and where you go." We've sorted the trends COTARU observes locally every Golden Week by area and time of day.

Crowds by time of day

Time Crowd level Recommended action
Until 9:00 Low Best for photos and strolls at the canal and Sakaimachi
9:00–11:00 Increasing Still easy to move. Good for securing a place to eat
11:00–15:00 Most crowded The canal is full of people, waits for food
15:00–17:00 Easing slightly Easier to move, but still lots of foot traffic
17:00–19:00 Calming down A quiet, beautiful time at the canal at dusk
From 19:00 Low Good for night views and dinner

Crowd trends by area

The crowds concentrate especially in two areas: along the Otaru Canal (around Asakusa Bridge) and Sakaimachi Street (from Minami-Otaru to Märchen Square). At the midday peak (11:00–15:00), both get so crowded that it's hard even to walk.

Meanwhile, the former Temiya Line site (green walkway) and the Ironai and Minatomachi areas are hidden gems. Even within Otaru, there are fewer tourists, and you can spend time relatively leisurely even during Golden Week.

Timing strategies for enjoying the canal and Sakaimachi comfortably

The canal and Sakaimachi Street are both "the face of Otaru you'll want to visit at least once." But the midday crowds are considerable. Here are two patterns, an early-morning strategy and an evening strategy, for enjoying them while avoiding the crowds.

The quiet of Sakaimachi Street in the early morning — a chance for photos with few people around

The early-morning and evening strategies work best when used according to your purpose.

Early-morning strategy (until 9:00)

  • Early morning is by far the best for canal photos. You may even have the angle of the warehouses from the bridge all to yourself
  • Many shops on Sakaimachi Street open at 10:00 or 11:00, so a route where you stroll while waiting for them to open is efficient
  • Mornings can be chilly, so bring an extra layer for warmth

Evening strategy (after 17:00)

  • Sunset during Golden Week is around 19:00. At dusk, the gas lamps on the canal bridges begin to light, giving a completely different mood from daytime
  • Many tourists have moved on to their lodgings or dinner by this time, so there are fewer people and photos are easier
  • A walk along the canal after dinner is especially highly rated by repeat visitors

Parking guide

The parking problem is what tourists most often mention as their "trouble" in Otaru during Golden Week. Well-known car parks around Otaru Station and the canal often fill up at the Golden Week peak (10:00–15:00).

How you choose a car park makes a big difference depending on what you know. Here is a summary of the trends.

Car parks that fill up easily (watch out)

  • Private car parks right by the Otaru Canal (around Asakusa Bridge)
  • Car parks and coin parking in front of Otaru Station
  • Car parks along Sakaimachi Street

Because these have excellent access to popular sights, at the Golden Week peak some fill up by mid-morning.

Places with relatively more space (hidden gems)

  • Car parks along the Chuo Rinko Line (within a 5–10 minute walk of the canal): a little away from the Otaru Port and canal area, so a bit of a hidden gem. COTARU staff also refer to this area when they need to park nearby for a long time
  • Car parks in the Ironai and Minatomachi areas: because you walk one or two blocks from the canal area, it's easier to find space
  • Entering early (before 9:00): at any car park, entering before the crowds makes long stays easier

For the latest parking information and availability, use the Otaru City parking guidance system together with checking on site when you arrive.

Comparing transport options

The main transport options for Otaru during Golden Week are car, JR, bus and rental bike. Here is how they compare.

Transport Avoiding crowds Luggage Flexibility Golden Week suitability
Car △ (parking problems) ◎ ◎ △
JR (Sapporo–Otaru) ◎ (crowding is on board) △ △ ○
Bus ○ △ △ ○
Rental bike ◎ (no parking needed) ○ ◎ ◎

COTARU staff especially recommend rental bikes.

The reason is simple: they eliminate the parking problem. By bike you can move freely not only around the canal and Sakaimachi but also to Shukutsu, the former Temiya Line and the Ironai area, stopping instantly at any spot that catches your eye. The biggest strength of a rental bike is being able to loop around in half a day a distance that would take a whole day on foot.

If you use JR, extra Rapid Airport and rapid trains between Sapporo and Otaru may run during Golden Week, but crowding is unavoidable. It's important to leave plenty of time before and after boarding.

Food spots during Golden Week

During Golden Week, many restaurants and souvenir shops in Otaru operate on special schedules. Otaru glass workshops, sweets shops and seafood shops may extend their hours or offer seasonal menus for Golden Week.

However, specific hours and special menus differ by shop and change every year. It's important to check each shop's latest information on its official website or the Otaru Tourism Association's guidance just before you go.

Here are practical points for eating during Golden Week.

  • For popular places with lines, it's effective to line up before opening or go after 13:00. Waits are especially likely at the lunch peak (11:30–13:00)
  • Don't concentrate your lunch on Sakaimachi Street: there are good restaurants one street back and in the Ironai area too. They are less crowded, and you can often get in without waiting
  • Street food: eating while strolling on Sakaimachi Street is something you can enjoy even in the crowds. Just move slowly with the flow of people
